Project Description

The Costa Del Sol condo renovation project was for a 3 + 1 bedder, 3 bedrooms and 1 study, for 2 of them staying in the condo. The location is facing the east coast coastline, with a fantastic unblocked view of the entire stretch of East Coast Park as well as the coast itself.

When the clients were deciding to engage and ID, they had shortlisted 3, with them finally selecting Thom Signature. Before the proposal began, we did some sketches for the client to give an idea of what the designs could look like.

Design approach

Thom Signature Reviews: For the Costa Del Sol Condo project, there was no specific theme or idea. Instead, the clients had some pre-existing furniture such as a sofa set, chest of drawers and dining table which they wished to match the renovation as much as possible.

The main idea was to have a modern contemporary feel, plus some fusion touches of an Asian colonial look. Some out of the box approaches were utilised, such as subway tiles with turquoise green that give a refreshing look in the master bathroom.

Followed by the kitchen area, where cindered stone was used with some splashback to give a very luxury and modern touch to the kitchen.

Living Area: The living area had a full-height window which created a scenic view. A very unique feature was the walnut timber wood island counter top. The client went down to the showroom with us to select the piece of table top, and had some pieces cut out as well. Those pieces were used to extend to parts of the furniture. The client was overjoyed after the counter top was installed, as this gave a very unique touch to the whole set of furniture. Darkwood laminate was selected to integrate with the walnut wood counter top. This tied everything up together very well in the dry kitchen area, with the timber trellis ceiling, walnut countertop and hexagon terracotta tiles.

Study: we built in the study table to be up against the direct view of the coastline.

   

Challenges

Thom Signature Reviews: Many of the challenges are reflected in the following photos. The main challenge was that many of the ideas implemented eventually were developed on the go during the renovation. Constant updates were necessary and being carried out throughout the renovation.

One big challenge was the main selling point of the apartment design: the entrance to the apartment with the timber trellis implemented on the ceiling, as this would have potentially caused issues with certain services such as air-conditioning and trunking.

This was overcome by raising the ceiling, while creating the timber trellis with a curve to align with the corridor entrance when entering the home. This gives a very welcoming feel and unique touch when entering the house.

Another big challenge was the flooring: retaining the marble flooring while incorporating terracotta hexagon tiles to submerge with the marble flooring. This required a high technical skill level and unusual approach to slice the current marble floor and insert the hexagon terracotta tiles. We had to be daring to make this idea a reality.
