Review of 446B Punggol Way
Thom Signature Reviews: 446B Punggol Way
Project Description
For the 446B Punggol Way project, the clients were an elderly couple moving in with their daughter. This wasn’t their first home as they previously lived in a larger executive Apartment and decided to downsize to a four-room flat. The shift from a more spacious unit posed a challenge in terms of space and storage planning. The couple was open to modernizing the new space and gave the designer full creative control to design a home that was stylish yet functional.
Design approach
The aim was to maximize the smaller layout while delivering a clean, contemporary look. Smart carpentry and thoughtful layout planning were key elements in creating a harmonious flow that accommodated their lifestyle needs.
Living Room:
To enhance spatial flow and symmetry, one of the original rooms was knocked down to open up the living and dining areas. This allowed for a more expansive living space and positioned the dining area in the space previously designated as a bedroom. A central TV feature wall was designed to create a balanced focal point within the living room.
The flooring was entirely redone with new tiles, as the BTO flat did not come with pre-installed flooring. The result was a sleek, seamless foundation that tied the entire home together.
Kitchen:
The kitchen was designed with functionality in mind. A sliding door was installed to separate the kitchen and contain cooking fumes when necessary. A custom bar counter was an idea from the uncle that was created to store and display his collection of hard liquor.
The bomb shelter and altar were cleverly integrated with feature carpentry to maintain a cohesive design across the communal spaces.
Bathrooms:
The daughter desired a modern luxury look for the bathroom, opting for a darker, more dramatic theme. This was achieved using dark tiles paired with mosaic detailing on the shower wall, creating a unique feature wall that elevated the space.
This project reflects a thoughtful downsizing journey—where smart layout changes and bold design elements helped transform a modest four-room flat into a comfortable and stylish haven. With open-minded clients and a strong collaborative vision, we were able to craft a home that balances modern elegance with practical day-to-day living.
